Shocking incident at Switzerland’s Alpine Bear Reserve where Bruno the bear was shot after a man jumped into the enclosure
Shocking scenes unfolded at Switzerland’s Alpine Bear Reserve when a man leapt into a bear enclosure in front of horrified visitors. The reserve, which had reopened following a major renovation, became the site of chaos when a 26-year-old man climbed onto a perimeter wall and suddenly jumped into the habitat.
The Encounter
Inside, Bruno, a massive European brown bear weighing over 40 stone, reacted immediately—charging the intruder and dragging him across the ground. Witnesses said Bruno rose onto his hind legs and clamped his jaws onto the man’s upper body, overpowering him within seconds.
Police officers, already on scene after staff raised the alarm, made the split-second decision to fire when the attack intensified. Bruno was struck in the chest.
The man survived and was rushed to hospital with severe injuries but was later listed in stable condition.
Aftermath
The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon in November 2025. Photographs captured Bruno in the moments before the shot, appearing startled by the sudden intrusion.
An eyewitness, visiting with family, said:
“People were screaming. The bear was standing over him, and no one knew what to do. It was terrifying.”
Authorities later confirmed the man had been pacing the enclosure wall for several minutes before jumping, allowing staff to alert emergency services.
Veterinarians treated Bruno on-site. Although critically injured, he survived after receiving antibiotics and monitoring. The bullet fragments were left in place to avoid further trauma.
Public Sympathy
The incident sparked widespread sympathy for the bear. Visitors left flowers, notes, and jars of honey near the enclosure fence.
Today, Bruno remains at the reserve alongside his companion and their two cubs, as officials review safety measures and visitor protocols.
