Royal Scots recall Chinese aid in Lisbon Maru sinking

The Royal Regiment of Scotland on Tuesday posted a movie announcement with a synopsis about the award-winning documentary film "The Sinking of The Lisbon Maru" on its Facebook account.
It said the film will be available to view online from Friday in Britain and Ireland.
The Tuesday post came after the regiment's previous post on Facebook days ago, which highlighted the role of Chinese civilians in rescuing British prisoners of war (POWs) after the 1942 sinking of the Japanese cargo ship Lisbon Maru off eastern China.
The regiment recalled how local fishermen saved 384 POWs despite the loss of more than 800 lives when the ship, carrying British captives, was torpedoed near Zhejiang Province during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
"About three to five miles away were some islands towards which a swift current was running, but the islands appeared to be rocky and dangerous. Some men reached the islands, but many were lost on the rocky coast. Others were picked up by Chinese junks and sampans, which put out from the islands," the regiment posted last week.
Of the 373 Royal Scots on board, 144 died, 33 died later in captivity, and 196 were liberated, according to the post. "These Chinese treated the men with great kindness, giving them food and clothing from their meagre supplies and looking after them until the Japanese landing party came to recover them," it added.
The rescue remains an extraordinary act of humanity and a lasting link between China and Britain.
